Online psychotherapy: for whom, why?

Online therapies are on the rise. Gain comfort, time, but also reasons related to disorders that too often slow down to push the door of a cabinet “psy”.

For all those who can not go see a “psy” in the office, for whatever reason, the sessions are held on Visio-chat platforms (Skype or others). It is a technology implemented twenty years ago and offers opportunities for those who do not have the opportunity to move or choose, according to criteria that belong to them, to do their therapy online . There is no reason to justify this because it is a choice that does not hinder therapeutic or analytical work and that respects the ethics of analysis and psychotherapy.

It is important to know that an online interview is by no means a “stop-go”: it is a means of communication in its own right and the sessions that take place there are full sessions. The conditions are not exactly the same as in the office sessions since the physical presence is not there, but the exchange is the same: exchange of glances, words, silences between the therapist and his patient.Listening, respect, trust, benevolence, confidentiality are well at the rendezvous. It’s the same job, the same process, the same cost, and of course the same framework that was pre-established in the first session.

The technology has evolved, and especially studies have proved that the results were just as good as in the “classic” sessions, in the office. There is therefore no reason to deprive oneself of this mode of doing if it suits everyone.

Online therapy offers advantages in many ways: obvious advantages of convenience, but more important benefits for all those who have troubles in their approach to the other, difficulties to engage, to confide. Some people suffer from agoraphobia, social phobia, severe depression, etc. These people are to listen to, to hear like all the others. So we need to simplify the consultation, go to meet them and the current technology allows us to do it. This is a very important step forward.

Online psychotherapy is not intended to replace psychotherapy in practice: it is there as a plus, as a possibility that comes when coming to the therapist is a test or simply impossible: distance, hard work, schedules heavy, illness, fear of “what shall we say” etc. The list is as long as the various reasons that each person is entitled to advance.

Online psychotherapy also offers the great advantage of being able to choose a “psychiatrist” regardless of where you live.

The geographical distance is abolished and the choice of his therapist is thus very wide. While some psychotherapists, still reluctant to face these modern methods, criticize the argument of “ease”: on the one hand, a work of psychotherapy is never easy, on the other hand, psychotherapy or psychoanalysis have not the duty to be “punitive”. A method more adapted to our current constraints of life, often heavy, is put in place to facilitate therapy: why deprive oneself of this convenience? Not only is she not sulking but on the contrary she invites to consult anyone who still has reservations about pushing the door of a psychiatric office: if only for this reason alone, online therapy is to consider it a great blessing.

The computer screen is not a barrier between the therapist and the subject but a screen-inviting, a screen-benevolence for some and thus a liberating screen, which engages to confide, which facilitates speech. To say oneself is not an easy task and all that can be used to access it, while respecting the ethics of psychoanalysis, is to be considered as well founded.
